The Cargo Security Alliance is committed to the identification, development and propagation of Best Practices in cargo security across the global land, sea and air supply chain.
Effective security programs consider the supply chain from end-to-end. They are multi-faceted and multi-layered; a single best practice does not constitute an effective supply chain security program.
Best Practices are defined as security measures that:
Meet and exceed industry, U.S. government (C-TPAT, CCSP, etc.) and international security standards and criteria;
incorporate management support;
have written policies and procedures that govern their use;
employ a system of checks and balances;
have measures in place to ensure usage, compliance and continuity.
Best practices are achieved through effective utilization and integration of people, processes and technology. Best practices incorporate a system of checks and balances, oversight, accountability and verification of reliability throughout each aspect and node of the supply chain to ensure its integrity.
Best practices assist businesses in theft and loss prevention and asset protection; they also prevent the introduction of contraband, terrorists and weapons of mass effect. Effective security programs approach the supply chain from end-to-end; they are multi-faceted and multi-layered, a single best practice does not constitute an effective supply chain security program. A supply chain is only as strong as its weakest link.
For supply chain security best practices to exist, be effective and proliferate they require the full support of executive management. They must become an integral part of a company’s mission, culture, core business processes and part of a “continuous improvement” philosophy. In addition to the obvious cost savings from reduced inventory losses, benefits include increased operational efficiency, supply chain visibility and velocity.
